Lokahi Garden Sanctuary and Organic Farm

Lokahi Garden Sanctuary and Organic Farm is located in beautiful Hawai'i, Hawai'i in the North Kohala district of the Big Island. The farm consists of a market garden, cash crop plots, fruit and nut trees, medicinal plants and a nursery. Chickens and sheep are raised as well.

There are two distinct opportunities available on the farm: Apprenticeship Program (fee based), Internship Program (work-trade).

We offer an exciting educational opportunity for apprentices that includes permaculture and organic agriculture instruction with farmers Dr. Richard Liebmann N.D. and Dillon Cruz. Dr. Liebmann, the first executive director of United Plant Savers, has been living in Hawaii since 1979 and practices naturopathic medicine in addition to farming and gardening for over 40 years.
Dillon Cruz has over a decade of experience in agriculture. He received his Permaculture Design Certification from the Ecovillage Training Center on The Farm in Summertown, TN and was certified to teach Permaculture Design in 2010 by Cascadia Permaculture.

The program will include lecture, film, and hands on learning in topics including, but not limited too, an introduction to permaculture design, soil, composting, organic gardening/farming, natural medicine, growing herbs, harvesting and processing produce, and making value added products. Additionally apprentices will participate in a wellness program which may include Pilates, reiki, body work restoration therapy, nutrition classes and cooking classes.

Depending on needs of the farm, the hands on learning at Lokahi Garden Sanctuary consists of tending our market and herb gardens (soil amending, planting, weeding, harvesting, organic pest management), planting trees and maintaining our orchards, maintaining our over 220 different species in our botanical sanctuary, caring for our chickens, sheep, dogs and cats, planting wind breaks, helping with marketing and selling produce at the local outdoor market, and assisting in some general construction.

Accommodation and Food:
Tent camping is included in the basic fee. Please bring a tent with a full rain fly. Other lodging is available for an additional fee. Apprentices will have access to a propane cook stove, fridge, and bathroom facilities including shower. We accept a maximum of three apprentices at a time to ensure plenty of individual instruction. We provide fresh, organic fruits and veggies, eggs from the farm and supplement with grains, beans, and other healthy food. Wireless internet is available (bring your own laptop) in the common area.

Apprenticeships are two months in duration. Cost is $1500.00 (includes tent camping).

Interns will work 25-30 hours per week in exchange for tent camping, basic food,
shower and internet access (with your own laptop). A minimum one month commitment is required.
