Medicinal Plants of Northern California
May 17 – 18, 2008

Instructor: Christopher Hobbs
Location: UC Berkeley campus and the UC Botanical Garden

California is a treasure-trove of medicinal plant species. Many famous medicinal species from cultures around the world grow wild in California, and others are commonly cultivated as ornamentals. Many species of European herbs such as Arnica, valerian, Angelica, and gentian are common and native to the Sierra Nevada. The herbs Grindelia (gum plant), yerba santa, and coffeeberry were official drugs in the U.S. Pharmacopeia in the early 20th century. About 60% of the major herbs in the Chinese materia medica are available in nurseries and are commonly grown as garden plants and street trees, such as privet, jujube, star jasmine, and honeysuckle.

This experiential class will provide an introduction to the biology, chemistry, and conservation of some important medicinal species found in Northern California. Historical and modern clinical uses of many locally available species will be emphasized. There will be demonstrations of traditional methods of herb harvest, drying, processing, and extraction. Commercial tinctures and extracts, as well as homemade products, will be available to sample. A highlight of the class will be a half-day plant walk at the UC Botanical Garden on Sunday to meet many medicinal species in person.

Course fee ($175/$200, Friends of the Jepson Herbarium member/non-member) includes garden entrance fee.

For more information or to register for the workshop, please visit the website (http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/workshops/) or contact Anna Larsen at the Jepson Herbarium:

Free and open to the public.  Register by emailing
chris@harmonyhillretreat.com or call her at 607-278-6609
This year HerbDay will be a little different in our village of East Meredith. Since we in our community are very involved in water quality, nourishing what grows and lives around us, relocalization, community gardens, etc., we thought bringing this consciousness into the HerbDay's theme just seemed like the right thing to do.
Its going to be like a city block party but in the country.......on 70 acres of woods and fields, weaved with trails and brooks and all of Nature.
The day will begin with a noon meal where everyone brings a dish to pass and the recipe to share. Bring your herbal wares or crafts to share. If anyone wants to play their music, great. Do some hand stands or back flips, wonderful.
Then the learning begins. From about 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. groups will form into general topics or interests. Each will have a moderator so everyone has a chance to talk / teach / learn.
National HerbDay will be remembered with an honoring circle at 6 p.m.

UpS Education Guide

The Education Guide is a UpS publication that has been through a few incarnations since its initial development. You’ve seen it if you’ve rented or purchased the Slide Show or participated in Partners In Education. It’s intended to provide both curriculum information on the “At Risk” plants and sustainable use of medicinal herbs generally as well as valuable advice on event planning from a garden club talk to a Planting the Future-type conference. In short, the Education Guide is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in giving a presentation on native medicinal plants. Many pages and sections of the Guide can be copied for use as handouts.
